Dinner for One

I was going to post something else, but then I got reminded of the German New Years tradition of watching "Dinner for One."

For those of you who don't know German don't worry, the video is in English, (and I don't mean dubbed). It was recorded in Hamburg originally although it stars two British actors, and strangely enough it is almost unknown in the United Kingdom.

The premise is simple Mrs. Sophie has a dinner party every year, but as time went on the guests all passed away. Now her butler James impersonates them all rather then let tradition die, unfortunately (or fortunately if you like humor) this requires James to drink all the guests alcohol. Add in one horribly placed Tiger skin rug, and well you'll see.

So let your self be a little international this year and give "Dinner for One" a chance.

Also here is an article explaining the details of the video more in depth.

Vaguely technological related post

Some of my more eagle-eyed guests may have noticed I made mention yesterday of the next post being about PSA's. That post will happen once I can find a couple of ones I'm having trouble locating. For today we have some news that are all related to technology.

The Library of Congress wants to start streaming movies online. Sounds good to me.

The secret methods of progress bars...and I don't mean this place

Finally just sit back and enjoy The Beauty of Pixar.

Thanks for your time, and I'll see you tomorrow.

Fun videos and an important message

I wanted to give you guys some fun stuff to look at today. There's this guy on YouTube, JamesAtWar, and he's pretty awesome. Seems like a cool, geeky dude. Check out his YouTube channel here. It's full of hilarious parody songs and some of his own originals. There's also some parody songs that have a bit more depth and meaning, so it's not all fun and games. But seriously people, check these out:

Harry Potter - Parody of Train's Hey Soul Sister

A Dexter Omage: I Just Haven't Killed You Yet - Parody of Michael Buble's I Just Haven't Met You Yet

And finally, a song about fame and how it can become a plague on our society. It's cool to admire someone because you like their work or they do good things for others or they're just genuine or genuinely nice. But it's not okay to obsess about someone to the point of losing yourself. Being an individual is what makes you interesting - so be unique, just be uniquely you.

Celebrity - Parody of Owl City's Fireflies

Happy viewing!

People called Romanes they go the house

In 1979 Monty Python gave a humorous lesson in Latin.

I think this joke maybe having a resurgence. (Don't call it a comeback Monty Python has been here for years.) From Fallout: New Vegas to Champions League Soccer. (Who says Germans don't have a sense of humor?)

I'll be back with a longer post tomorrow.

My dog is an angry racist

I think my dog might be a racist. This past Christmas, spoiled little thing that she is, she received several presents. My husband and I bought her Christmas-y ones: a red squeaky bone that has snowflakes on it and a red, green and white rope toy. Rope toys are about the only thing she can't tear up in half a day, so we thought those were good choices. She also received gifts from my roommates mom ( a green sock monkey), my mother in law (a black stretchy dog), and my boss's dog (a squeaky bear). Why my boss's dog got my dog a present is beyond me.

Anyways, my dog barely glanced at the toys we gave her. First, she wanted to play with bear. Bear happened to be an American Kennel Club toy and she had him tore up within an few hours, so he had to be laid to rest. But I thought 'Good for her, tear up that snobby toy'.

Next, it was sock monkey, and sock monkey is British. You can tell by the accent he has when my husband brings him out for the dog. At first it was 'oh a toy' and she was happy just to run around and chase sock monkey. However, when the accent came out she went crazy, biting him all over and tugging on him trying to pull his legs off. It was a hard time for sock monkey. Eventually she tore a hole in his back and started pulling out his stuffing, so he had to be hospitalized until reconstructive surgery can be scheduled.

Now she's moved her terrifying jaws of death to black dog. So far black dog has held up nicely, so I have some hope that maybe my dog has finally met her match. I'm cheering for you black dog.

And all you Brits out there - watch out for Dixie.

Why Germany thinks we're crazy.

I spent three years in Germany with the U.S. Army, one thing that was surprising was how often Germans would come up and ask our opinions on issues that were unfolding in America. Honestly most of the time they were more well informed then most American's I knew.

So it shouldn't have been any form of surprise when I got back and was annoyed at the apathy I found. No one followed the news, and no one seemed to be trying to influence anything for the better.

This article summarizes a lot of the feelings I felt in 2003, even if it is dealing with issues of 2010/2011. Yes I know it's not identical, but it's the closest I've found in resent years, even if I don't agree with it fully.

See you tomorrow.

Hopefully with a much more cheerful post.

Holidays, New and Old

I was going to make mention of the fact Kwanzaa and Boxing Day were yesterday, but I forgot to include it in yesterday's Link Dump post.

Happy Boxing Day everyone.

I have yet to nail down when these next two holidays exactly are but I think these will catch on soon.

They are Apathy Day and Sophisticus

As far as funny things for Kwanzaa...yeah I got nothing. I guess it's fair in a weird way. I didn't post anything for our Jewish friends who celebrate Hanukkah, but they're probably sick of Adam Sandler anyway.

26 December 2010

There's nothing like link dump for the holidays.

Dr. Who's season started yesterday with their annual Christmas episode. So to celebrate the Doctor's return here is What happens when geekdoms collide.

New Years resolutions are coming up and I'm pretty sure one of mine is to never end up on one of Failblog's the worst of the year videos.

A while back we reported about the Army wanting to give every soldier a smartphone, here's one soldier it can't get here quick enough for. AT&T hands soldier $16,000 phone bill. At&T has decided to credit the bill, so that's been taken care of, but still an important story.

Christmas in a galaxy far, far away....

No I'm not posting a link to the Star Wars Holiday special. I want people to continue reading this blog.

The Star Wars Special they should have made. Finally a movie that answers why Darth Vader's handwriting looks suspiciously like Santa's.

Have a great Christmas, I'll see you tomorrow.

News, politics, and other words that make people's eye glaze over

Don't Ask Don't Tell repealed. I've been waiting to post this until the paperwork was actually signed. That happened last night, so let me tell you a quick story. Years ago when I was in the Army, I saw several people get kicked out of the army on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". I saw several people who were hard workers and good soldiers get discharged just for being gay. Meanwhile several lazy or incompetent soldier stayed in the entirety of their contracts and got out with an honorable discharge.

People have asked "But won't they be a distraction?" I doubt it. It didn't distract us when we knew who was gay or straight. We got the job done and for the most part we respected each other.

So if you'll excuse me I'm going to go crack open a beer for my friends who got kicked out of the army, and for the fact their fate shouldn't happen to anymore decent soldiers.

While searching for a really awesome dinosaur bed/tent that I had when I was a kid I found this page. I've got to admit the Murphy TARDIS bed would be better if it were not a twin bed.

Also thanks to James...Eva Mendes' s.ex tape. If its on here you can assume it's not what you assume it is.

When I find that awesome dino tent-bed I'll post it. See you later.

Net Neutrality?

So the FCC ordered Net Neutrality instituted. However people on both sides aren't happy with it.

One side says it will hurt businesses and gives consumers too much power.

The other side says it has "too many loopholes", the rules "fall far short of what they could have been", also it is being called "Fake Net Neutrality".

Sorry I don't have more time to flesh this out for you, but you can read an article on it here. I knew this was going to be our news for the day, and I was hoping it would have been annonced a little sooner, so I could write up more before work.

Well see you tomorrow.

Webcomics!

Mondays kinda suck for most people, so here's a little pick me up: Webcomics! Or, more correctly, Ginger's favorite webcomics:

Questionable Content. Nothing really questionable about this content, except for maybe Pintsize. But it's mostly funny, sometimes sad. Pretty much an 'everyday life' sort of comic. Only more awesome. Updates every weekday.

Eerie Cuties. A chocolate addicted vampire? A shy succubus? A tomboy medusa? What!?! Updates Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

Girls with Slingshots. Also an 'everyday life' sort of comic. Has a more even ratio of male to female characters than QC, but focuses more on the two 'title' female characters. Also awesome. Updates every weekday.

Candi. An everyday life/college story. Light and sweet, good for laughs. Updates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.

Punch n' Pie. Another 'everyday life' comic. Interesting characters, heavy female interest. Much more realistic plot than some comics. Updates Tuesday, Thursday.

School Bites. Cool art, a monster school, music influence and secret romance. What's not to love? Updates Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

Hope you enjoy these and happy Monday!

Total eclipse of the...moon.

In case you hadn't heard there will be an eclipse tonight starting at 11:27pm central time. Keep in mind that's only the very beginning of it. The total eclipse will last from 1:40am to 2:53am with the total eclipse happening at 2:17am central time (so if you work second shift like me this is perfect.) The last traces of eclipse will be at 5:06 central time. So if your an early riser for work, or you have insomnia, then you can see the end as well.

This will be only the 2nd total lunar eclipse to happen since the beginning of the common era (the birth of Christ/1AD.) I assume they found this out by asking Doc Brown*.

You can get more information then you ever needed from Wikipedia or NASA.

As I mentioned I'll be up due to work so we may have some pictures to post tomorrow.

This post seems kind of short so to tie things together here's something silly in related news.

*By the way the good doctor is supposed to be part of an announcement on the 22nd.

Sports from around the world.

Yeah I know my last post was about politics and this post is about sports. And this is supposed to be a geek blog now. The sports thing will eventually make sense, and as far as politics go...somebody has to keep an eye on that stuff, it may not be fun but it's important (if only so you know who to vote out when the time comes.) Also we're in a transitional phase here, so bear with me. Thanks for your patience.

From Germany: Stuttgart wins the 1st German National Roller Derby Championship. They've only been playing this sport for 4 years and there's already a national champion? Hey America time to get on the ball.

From Qatar: World Cup maybe moved to Winter in 2022. From the World Cup that is being dubbed "The FAIL that keeps on giving". So when in Qatar Don't be gay, don't be drunk (outside the stadium), don't be improperly dressed (if your female), we may need our neighbors to help us pull this off, and now they might not be able to get the climate controlled stadiums they promised? Might I suggest that if they can't get it together we just move the event to America.

UPDATE: I realized after I wrote this I should specify why a winter world cup is a problem. The problem is that a winter world cup will disrupt Europe's leagues (I'm not sure about other continents.) Granted they do have 12 years to deal with this problem and the others I mentioned above, but it seems like this wasn't thought all the way through when FIFA voted on who would host the World Cup.

From Canada: In 1995 Quebec lost a hockey team, 1100 fans of this team invaded New York last week in order to send a message that they would like a team again. You can read the aftermath here.

Not bad though a team that hasn't existed in 15 year getting 1100 people to go to another country for a single game. Especially when the game is being played by two teams who can't seem to draw a crowd to save their teams. (This statement maybe literal quite soon.)

Keeping with hockey, two goals that will make you say. Holy Crap.

Oh yeah tommorow is the last batch of games in European soccer until the new year so if you want to see some games go to ESPN3 (even if the games are too early for you, you can watch them on replay all weekend.) See you tomorrow.

Pitching to the dogs

In the spirit of giving, here's a story to warm your heart: White Soxs pitcher Mark Buehrle stepped up to pay veterinary bills for a stray dog this week after reading the dog's story on facebook. The dog, Shelby, was found in Godfrey IL this past week with a hunting arrow though her side. Shelby's vet bills are currently at $3000 and still climbing. Buehrle also volunteers with Midwestern Dogs and started a monthly adoption progam for U.S. strays called "Soxs for Strays". I know $3000 is not a lot for a major league pitcher who makes $14 million a year, but I do know that would be a lot to me. I'm happy there are people out there who have the money to make a major difference and are actually doing it.

Don't make major league money but still want to help? Your local animal shelter is always in need of supplies - pet food, pet beds, toys, animal friendly cleaning supplies, examination gloves, blankets, leashes and collars are great ideas and very inexpensive. No donation is too small! Shelters are almost always looking for volunteers too, so if you have time - donate it.

News?!?

Reasons to Stay in the Army?

On the old blog I used to have a section called Reason not to re-enlist, here is a reversal of that trend...maybe.

Monday the army announced that they would be giving ever soldier a smart phone. The soldiers either get their choice of an iPhone or an Android phone. And they are going to pay for the unlimited data plan. Wow!

Well that's cool and all, but my question to the army, and our government in general is why? Maybe it's for morale, maybe it's so it will be easier for the army to communicate with their unit. But in a time when the armed services are taking a pay freeze, and nobody seems to have a good answer on how to reduce our deficit, spending like this seems to be confusing at best.

We may soon be having posts more like this and less link dumps soon. Let me know what your opinions are.

Things Nobody Wants

It wouldn't be the Christmas season if people weren't putting together lists of horrible presents...that said this list is amazingly bad.

Nobody wanted to play in the Metrodome this weekend. I wonder...HOLY! You'd think someone would have expected Minnesota to get a lot of snow and built accordingly.

I was going to save this for a sports related post, (it'll be coming up later) but I decided these work better with today's theme. Sports jerseys no one wants to wear. I think I would ask for more money if I had to wear either of these, or get traded. Our first example is a holdiay jersey for the Florida Everblades a minor league hockey team. At least this thing only comes out once a year.

This sick dog is the year round jersey for a Parisian Rugby Team. It's hard to be a tough Frenchman, so sign up for Rugby, then we'll make sure no one will take you serious by putting you in a Pink and Blue Leopard Print jersey. Also WHO PAYS 100 EUROES FOR THIS? This is an enlargeable picture of the French Rugby teams jersey.

Awesome

Todays post deal in some way, shape, or form with awesome.

Our first article talks about a man who changed his name to Capt. Awesome. I'm reminded of a National Guardsman who in 2003 changed his name to Optimus Prime. A much cooler choice, you can google this he also had online fights with a guy who changed his middle name to Megatron. Also this image is somewhat related and awesome.

A man misses his train and the train misses him. It's awesome for the guy who jumps down to get him off the tracks before the train hits him.

Triceracopter. That is all.

I'm sure the homeless were freaked out while this was being filmed. Video achieves an awesome (old definition of the word) level of bizarreness. (Blogger is telling me bizarrity is not a word.)

Pirates attacked by vuvuzelas. It's not what you think but its worth checking out.

Also I appologize for yesterdays post. It was long and meandering, but I hope you at least learned something from it...other then that I'm a bad writer.

06 December 2010

The more you know.

What does this and this have in common.

Surprising little.

The only thing these two share is the region of Sankt Pauli. An area in Hamburg, Germany. The beer was originally brewed there, and the soccer team are still located there.

This region is the red light district of present day Hamburg. But in the past it was a dumping ground for the undesirables of society. Mostly any business or people considered too gross or foul smelling for Hamburg.

First off the beer was originally brewed here, only to eventually move to Bremen, but they kept the name. It is also a German beer that is not sold in Germany. Due to St. Pauli being synonymous with the red light district it would be like calling an American brew hooker beer or streetwalker beer. The clothing the girl is wearing is Bavarian (the far southern region of Germany, nowhere near St. Pauli.) So this beer has very little to do with the region anymore.

The Soccer Club (FC St. Pauli) plays in the region and even though it was faced with relegation (being forced down to a lower league due to coming in the last two spots), has risen back to the Bundesliga (highest level of German soccer). This is due to their unique fans. Their fans raised money for the teams to buy better players. Wikipedia doesn't mention a certain fact that every German has told me about this. The money was supposedly raised by the prostitutes in the red light district, (although I supposed there were many other fans who were willing to help by supporting local businesses). This year is only the 2nd year they've been in the Bundesliga since the 1999-2000 season. They are also commonly known as the Buccaneers of the League, the Brothel of the League or the Fun-house of the League.

Do a google search on this town it has a lot of fun reading associated with it.

A couple of links dealing with tech: good, bad, ugly, beautiful. We've got all the bases covered.

First up two links stolen from Greypaw.
Focused sunlight is powerful enough to melt steel, or rocks. In fact they state there is no substance on earth that can stand up to it.

An innovative doorknob. Could be useful, would definitely take some getting used to.

Finally someone thinks about the hardcore gamers out there.

I'm assuming this is justwell named wireless network but given the way the American intelligence community is...there's an outside chance you might want to stop any illegal activities if this shows up.

Not really tech related butAwesome Samus cosplay.

I saved this one for last so I could squeeze in a tangent. Japan promises amazing technology for 2022 world cup. Some of this technology is so amazing I would have been willing to see Japan host the World Cup for these items.

However Japan will not be hosting the 2022 World Cup as Qatar won the right to host it, and Russia won the bid for 2018.

Oh those wacky Iranians, (and Koreans)

With the recent wiki leaks release, one of the things that came out was that North Korea (no I will not call it Best Korea.) has less missles then we thought. Yeah! Unfortunetly that's because they were sold to Iran.

Soccer updates

So I forgot to post that the Women's World Cup had it's final draw yesterday. That's where we find out which teams will play each other.

So they're saying that 3 of the 4 groups are groups of death. And the other one is pretty tough, that sound to me like a balanced world cup. Good might be exciting.

Here's the draw if you'd like to see who got whom.

Don't forget that Thursday is the announcement on who will host the 2018 and 2022 world cups. Granted its a ways off but USA has a good chance to win the 2022 bid. The announcement will start around 9am central time, ESPN3 will be covering the event.

Back to the Future game. buy Telltale Games, and they got Christopher Lloyd to come back to voice Doc. And they got Michael J. random stuff

I don't really have much for you today.

The Women's National Team got into the world cup. They beat Italy 1-0.

These two guys met up recently. I assume they went out for a Dos Equis afterwards. I assume Bruce Campbell and Chuck Norris showed up later too.

Also new footage bring new information to an old mystery. Have a good rest of your holiday weekend. And I'll see you tomorrow.

26 November 2010

Womens Soccer

Tommorow the Womens National team plays Italy for a spot in the Women's World Cup.

The womens team is 22-1 when qualifing for the world cup since 1995. They lost for the first time this year when playing Mexico 2-1.

Our women's team are two time world cup winners (there have only been 5 championship teams), and it used to be that the US women's team basically just had to show up to get to the world cup.

Well the rest of the world has caught up. So this should be a good game to watch. ESPN will be covering it tomorrow at 1pm.

This isn't quite a link dump but things I thought needed to be mentioned.

Sometimes I have to marvel at 4chan despite (or maybe because of) all their weird behavior, they have some very strong lateral thinkers. An annoymous group can't exactly fight intellectual property theft in the courts. 4chan fights Hot Topic. Link provided by Liz.

Everyone has probably seen this, but FoxTrot meets Xkcd.

Evidently back in the day GE was trying to make an exoskeleton for workers to lift more weight, the article compares it to Iron Man but it makes me think of Ripley in Aliens. Also valve, this should be one of the engineers weapons.

Why are you so happy? Researchers want you to know that it's a psychological disorder. Yeah? Well, it sure beats the hell out of depression.

23 November 2010

Rock Band 3

I don't have any links for today. But we did rent Rock Band 3 the other day.

It's fun, but ultimetly it's just more songs, and better graphics. I played it on the Wii so I don't know how nice the X-box version looks, and we weren't able to rent the keyboard so I can't tell you about that. The biggest changes I could tell are that now you unlock almost everything rather then amassing fans and money you just get fans and unlock things based on how many stars and spades you get.

The spades are earned by doing some condition that is set at the beginning of the song (like a streak of so many notes, deploying overdrive so many times, or even reaching max multiplier) these conditions get harder as the game goes on.

You also don't have to buy clothes for your charecter, they just get unlocked as you gain fans and get through cities.

It's fun, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to get it, I might get it after it drops in price or buy it used. I still want to try out the pro guitar with out buying it.

22 November 2010

Follow ups

Todays theme is follow ups because the only three stories I have deal with earlier stories reported on here, or ongoing stories. What do you want, sometimes things just aren't that funny.

After Mt. Everest got low reviews on google it seems another famous location is needs to work on keeping its guests happier.

Following up on the MLS Final, The Colorado Rapids win 2-1 despite FC Dallas scoring two goals. Man Texas is not allowed to win a title this year.

Oh and for soccer fans keep in mind Saturday is USA vs Italy (women's) this will determine who gets into the world cup, this is the 2nd game. With USA winning the first game 1-0. America has only ever lost 1 game when the women's team is qualifying for the world cup.

In the continued reporting of the new travel checks, New TSA bumper stickers.

Award Winners

For the first time since the Vietnam War a living soldier has recieved the Medal of Honor. Here is a documentary about his story.

This is the story of a kid who was being bullied. The bully was taking his Mountain Dew every day and drinking it. So the kid starts bringing a urine in a Mountain Dew bottle. So the bullies family is upset and so is the family of the kid who was getting picked on. Parents are always saying stand up for yourself, but they also tell you not to pick fights. So here's a kid using his brain and everyone's upset. Can't please everybody, but it pleases me so I'm proud to announce that this kid wins the 1st annual Kspaz wishes he'd thought of that award.

Fans and their fandoms

Today's post is going to be short, mostly because I've been hanging pictures today.

I've been trying to get people to read Fans! for years, and is why you should start today.

and while we're talking about fanish things you might need to geek out your presents this year.

Nightmare fuel

Akari told me the video of the abandoned New Orleans Six Flags creeped her out. So today's post is dedicated to Nightmare Fuel, and brought to you by Can't sleep clown will eat me.

So is this creepy, or is it a clever way to work out childhood phobias?Flying Monkey Pinata. I didn't find the monkeys creepy as a kid but it seems like everyone else did.

Icelandic Flash Flood. This starts lokking like someone's nightmare towards the end. Yeah I know it's a strech but I wanted to include it, and it's my blog.

Canada's nightmare scenerio. I gotta admit I would hate this. It's already silly the things they make us do in order to get on a plane. I'll post more about this later.

Also a big shout out to new readers Hanna, Murphey, Murphey (no relation), Casselman, Frap. Good to have a way to talk to you guys again.

Dogs and Germany

I asked Giz what should I post about today. She said puppies.

So here you go. Prop B. Local news on the Daily Show.

Also due to me finding some of my army friends on Facebook I have decided to repost my photo album from our 2010 trip to Germany. If it asks you for a password and you don't know my wife's nickname, then private message me on facebook. The city names on the left will take you to photos (sorted by city).

Here's the albums

Jonathon Coulton has a song out called The Princess who Saved Herself. If you buy it from iTunes or Amazon your 99 cents goes towards relief in Haiti. Give it a listen at the link.

Also there is a chalkboard animation for Mandelbrot Set.

You win some, you fail some

Yes this post is all devoted to win vs fail. I'll let you decide for yourself, because some of these it all depends on which side your on.

THIS POST IS STUPID BECAUSE KURT POSTED THE SAME THING TWICE!

Bright Ideas

I'm sure this title will not be sarcastic.

Two movies are coming out which you should know about. Sadly not because of the sheer amount of awesome each represents. Fox is putting out a Family Circus movie, and the Creative Arts Agency is writing a script to make a Rubik's Cube movie.

I'd probably at least rent the rubik's cube one if it involved a cube that gave superpowers or something when it was solved. Sadly it seems that they are writing a script based on a Rubik's Cube speed solving competition. Early reports assume that consumers will get fed up with the movie after 5 minutes tear up the reel and reassemble the movie the easy way.

I might watch the Family Circus one with the help of Riff Trax.

I should have opened with this news.

Back in October The London Times reported that Fifa officials were taking bribes to choose which country would get the 2018 and 2022 Olympics. Saying that Russia had been bribing for the '18 games, and Australia was bribing for the '22 games. There has also been accusations about South Africa (the '10 hosts), Brazil (the upcoming '14 hosts) and USA and Qatar (both '22 hopefuls). These have not been confirmed.

So a high raking offical in FIFA has leaked that England will not win the '18 bid because they broke this news. Meaning that the running is either going to be Spain/Portugal or Russia. Russia says they were entrapped, Fifa says England should have told them before going to print.

But basically if Russia gets the next world cup you'll know what's up. If Spain gets it, it might mean they are trying to draw attention away from this. If England does end up winning it would mean this source is wrong, or that FIFA changed their mind.

The Vote will be on Dec 2nd (at 9am Central Time) for both the '18 host and the '22 host.

History

Looks like this is going to be a grab bag as well, none of the links really have much in common. But in historical news today is the anniversary of the falling of the Berlin Wall and yesterday was the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays (happened in Wurzburg, Germany).

Conan OBrien's show starts today. And evidently he wants everything to be perfect.

A photo from the upcoming muppet movie.

Did you ever get to go to Six Flags New Orleans? No?This may be your last chance to see it. It was deserted after Katrina and has never been reopened.

Betrayal at House on the Hill

Today was supposed to be my grab bag post, but not anymore. Betrayal at House on the Hill is being reprinted.

"What's that?" you ask. It is a horror themed board game where you're investigating a haunted house. But the real fun of this game is that one of the party members (players) is the killer/psycho/evil being/ect. And what's more is it's random, the game has a system where the scenario changes based on what rooms you're in and who sets the betrayal in motion. My group of friends has been looking for a copy of this since around last Halloween when the Iowa side of our group brought it down.

It's been out of print till now, and used copies were selling on ebay for around 70-80 dollars.

I have played this game 4 times. And so far we've had to fight a group of cannibals and their queen (played by my wife), the Midgardian serpent (Kaiser), aliens (Greypaw), and a flesh man who absorbs people (Greypaw again). A blurb on the website for the game claims there are 50 different outcomes. I have not confirmed this yet, but plan to check.

Supposedly WoTC/Avalon Hill will also be releasing expansions via the interwebs. So that the stories can continually change.

I highly recommend this game especially now that the new printing does not require you to carry around pages of errata to fix the misprints of the original game. Also the rules are not so crazy as to scare away new people, but still deep enough that some strategy is possible.

Our usual play through took about 1-2 hours depending on the luck of the draw.

I posted Ernie Cline's before. But it bears repeating. Give some of his tracks a listen over atSpoken Word.

Mr. Doctorow

I might be a little late to the party so forgive me for this, but I'm currently reading Makers by Cory Doctorow. I read his book Little Brother while traveling through Germany and I have got to say, this man writes Sci-Fi that seems possible. Both books are set in the near future. Little Brother had small things like the X-Box Universal (the next x-box...next box if you will. Where Microsoft gives the console away for free and charges a ridiculous amount for games and peripherals), that seemed so logical a next step that sometimes I wondered if I just didn't miss the announcement.

In both books Mr. Doctorow writes about gait-recognition software. A type of tech that would allow people to be identified by their walk. In Makers its being used to make a device for peoples homes that would unlock their doors while they are walking up the driveway. In Little Brother its used to keep an eye on kids in schools so they don't sneak out, but its also used by homeland security to keep an eye on people.

I got to thinking last night, does this exist. It sounds sci-fi, but it plausible. Sure enough it is a real technology. Yet the technology is in its infancy.

By the way Mr. Doctorow publishes his books under creative commons meaning you can download them for free if you aren't going to make any money off of it. Very nice for those of you who have an e-reader or don't mind reading from a computer. But you should definitely read his works.

And now for a silly link. Make a silly product get silly reviews. The Amazon community strikes again. For my money the best comments are about the airline pilots and the review claiming this is the worst ironing board.

Grab Bag

I was going to post about elections, but I got nothing to say that isn't true of most elections. The Puppy Mill Bill passed by less then 60,000 votes.

So here's some stuff that you might find interesting/funny.

First off in case you need to add dramatic effect to anything you say. It's the inception button.

Capt America pics. Shirtless shot for the ladies.

From the please explain it in terms of movies because we can't understand the science without the reference.Delete Tramatic Memories like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I get that more people probably will read this because of the reference...ignore me I'm in a mood to yell at stuff today.

02 November 2010

Election Day, the least magical day of the year.

Well lets get baseball out of the way first. The Giants beat the Rangers last night, and San Francisco has it's first World Series title.

Don't forget today is election day. I hope you all have done your homework.

And here to guide us out this week. some wise words from Vincent Price.

Sports...slap, pull, observe, release, tap, squeeze

Don't have any links for you today.

But I wanted to let people know that you can now get espn3 through your X-Box. Thanks to Kaze who let me know this. Now you are saying so what? Well if you ever wanted to see whats so cool about European Soccer or Rugby now is your chance, and a lot of the games can be viewed a day or two later so you don't have to let them interfere with your schedule.

Congrats to the Texas Rangers who won a game in the World Series on Saturday. They are the first Texas based team to win a game in the World Series. The Houston Astros were in the Series in 2005 and lost all 4 games.

Also if any one is interested in Hockey. Or was interested in learning about hockey now is an excellent time, because the St. Louis Blues are off to an excellent start. Their next game is Thursday against the Sharks. It will be on Fox Sports Midwest, or on 1120AM on your radio. For those of us with out cable, the internet and radio are the only ways.

Also I'll be very impressed if anyone can get what the title of this post is about.
Doubly impressed if you don't use google.

Hue Jass? Amanda Huginkis?

In case your looking to do pull some pranks tonight here is the complete list of prank names. Some of these are great, some of these are horrible. But the list is well worth a quick look over.

30 October 2010

quick post

This one will probably be quick, since we are having a Halloween party tonight.

Is NASA hiding life on Mars. No, but this article is an interesting read on why they aren't.

Something funny to keep you occupied. Ruined...or made better. Some of these are definetly better.

Do they eat quarter pounders in what?

The Deadpool script has been leaked. I'm debating whether or not to download this, the last leaked script I downloaded never got made.

But the snippets I've read online sound like the writers know the material.

Writer creates Venn Diagrams of peoples believes about ethnic food vs the actual food. If your not interested in this you still need to read the last diagram. Actually pretty interesting, but the build up to the last one is what makes it worth it.

Double Post

So because I had a very tacked on, last minute post yesterday. This one is going to have a couple of things to it.

First the Rangers lost 11-7 last night, so much for a pitcher's duel.

In case you're still needing to make a costume, How to make a Scott Pilgrim costume.

Yesterday was John Cleese's b-day in commemoration here is the best episode of Faulty Towers ever. Here are parts 2 and 3.

Oh god! The paperboy from Better Off Dead is still around.

To my legion of fan and the other fan

I missed posting today, so I'm posting on my lunch break. Don't have time to post anything great so I guess I'll have to make up for it tomorrow.

Good luck to Texas who is up 2-0 in Game 1 of the World Series right now.

25 October 2010

Way to cover your bases.

I don't have much today so here's a quick post before work.

This article talks about how Bengie Molina will get a World Series ring no matter who wins. Because he was traded from the Giants to the Rangers halfway through the season.

Return of the Link Dump

Ahhh the Link dump, the time when I say, these links don't have enough in common. Time to throw them at people before they become old news.

The correct way to tip everyone...incluing your sherpa, for your not so great trip to Mt. Everest.

Because I like flow chars here is a flow chart dealing with Cliche Female Characters in media.

...and here is one dealing with every RPG ever made.

Not really a flow chart, but instructions on a task with graphics. SO they get lumped in too. How to pet a kitty.

And the real size of Africa. Really this deals more with how our maps change our perceptions of the sizes of countries, just becasue the way they are presented doesn't show them at a good relative size.

Why did no one tell me Deadpool shows up in Hulk vs Wolverine?

For Bren, Day of the Triffids remake info.

24 year old girl makes her own Ninja Turtle Van.

Other people relive their childhood through less healthy ways.

On the political side.
A modern US President.

From the Daily Show, and posted by James Signs for sanity.

23 October 2010

Baseball...again.

The Rangers beat the Yankees last night, which means that if Seattle and Washington DC get to the World Series every team will have played in the fall classic (What's more they'll have all been there since the Cubs were last there.(1945 for those that care. 1908 is the last time they won the world series.))

Yes the Yankees are the most hated team in baseball, but why is that? I argue it's because of fans like this one.

The headline on Fark.com was "Chuck Norris roundhouse-kicked George Steinbrenner's tombstone so hard, it sent the Texas Rangers to the World Series." A runner up was "A-rod finally gets the Rangers to the World Series."

So congrats to the Rangers, now can you guys try to be the first Texas team to win a game in the World Series. Seriously don't get swept like the Astros.

22 October 2010

Controversy

A video about saving the environmnent. Some people have a problem with this. Warning: Gore (not Al Gore, like blood and such.)

I find this funny, (it just seems like a weird British humor skit to me, (IE Monty Python)) but I can see how people would hate this.

This is the website to the group who made the video. They took the video down after people got upset over it. Thankfully people are still upset about it and you can find the video on youtube.

A celebrity from out childhoods has been convicted of breaking a car for no good reason.

21 October 2010

Baseball

I've been making mention of how the Texas Rangers have already gotten further in the playoffs then they ever have before. The Rangers were originally the Washington Senators, in 1961. They became the Rangers in 1972 when they moved to Arlington. Throughout their 50 years history they had only won one playoff game in 3 playoff series before this year. Now the Rangers are one game away from their first AL Pennant. Only 3 teams (out of 30) at the moment have never won a pennant. They are the Rangers, the Seattle Mariners, and the Washington Nationals (who used to be the Montreal Expos).

On the other side we have the San Fransisco Giants who have not won a world series since 1954 back when they were the New York Giants. They are also one game away from a pennant. Granted they have been to the world series since then, but if these two teams get to the World Series. We will be guaranteed a new champion or a champion that hasn't won since Eisenhower was the president.

In fact looking online I was surprised to find out that even though only 8 (out of 30) teams get into the playoffs, only five teams haven't been in the playoffs in the last 10 years. In fact all but 7 have been in the playoffs in the last 5 years.

This wouldn't be surprising in the NHL or NBA were more then half the teams get in the playoffs. (16 out of 30 teams for both leagues.)In fact their longest droughts are 9 years for the NHL and 6 years for the NBA.

Well let me wrap up this long post by saying good luck to the Rangers and Giants.

IF you are interested here is the list of baseballs various playoff droughts.

19 October 2010

This blog looks weird without titles.

So Anonymous has a new target, the MPAA and by association Gene Simmons.

And for your viewing pleasure the Black Hole. Not the Disney movie.

And congrats again to the Texas Rangers this time for beating the Yankees twice in one post-season series, that's once more then they did in the last 3 times this happened. They now have a 2-1 game lead in the series.

To celebrate here is the now president of the Texas Rangers, Nolan Ryan, beating up a man 20 years younger then him. Evidently he only hands out beating through his team, not for them anymore.

18 October 2010

A famous author is atop the NY Times bestseller list. Why is this news? The author died before The NY Times had a bestseller list. Congratulations Samuel Clemens.

Because it came up in conversation, here's the chick track that claims Dungeons and Dragons is evil. Dark Dungeon.

And finally years ago I posted a video from youtube called Off the Wall here is a follow up. Wallby interviews Weird Al. Hopefully these start becoming a little more regular.

Welcome to the new Time to make the Donuts.

Which will feature...pretty much the same things as the old one.

Our archives will remain here, for those who wish to view them.

Unfortunetly we start off this new space for the blog with some sad news.

Benoit Mandelbrot has died. You know what he did even if you don't know the name.
