Soccer Sequel

Okay so this is just going to be soccer related news, that I couldn't squeeze in with my last article. So if you don't care for soccer ignore this one and I'll get it out of my system...maybe.

First off Paul the octopus...remember him, the octopus who picked 8 World Cup matches and went 8 for 8. Then died months later. Well the aquarium where he lived has made a momunment and urn for him. I don't know what really to say about this, this story started weird and just got weirder. Way to go Paul, your sure to be the most famous Octopus, pretty much ever.

St. Pauli is in the news again. This time for their goalie, 24 year old Thomas Kessler. He works as a custodian in the off season, but is St. Pauli's new starting goalie. He works and resides in Koln and will get to play his hometown next week on Saturday.

Also if you are looking for international soccer there is the Asian Cup going on the next couple days sorry I was late to report this, there are only 4 matches left Uzbekistan vs Australia and South Korea vs Japan. Winners go on to the final, losers play for 3rd place. And the champions go on to the Confederation's Cup in 2013. What's that...maybe you'll find out next week.

The two semi-final games will be on Tuesday at 7:25am (South Korea vs Japan) and 10:25am (Uzbekistan vs Australia).

But the real reason I mention the Asian Cup (besides name dropping the Confederation's Cup) is that the entire Axis of Evil was in one group of the Asian cup. I know it's not exactly topical, but Iran, Iraq, North Korea (and the United Arab Emirates) were all in one group meaning that two of these teams had to get through. In a way I guess this shows the way the world changes, this would have been a silly talking point a couple years back. I mean the US government almost wouldn't let Cuba participate in the World Baseball Classic a few years back, but this didn't even get a bit of air time. Or it could just be that most Americans don't give a penalty kick about soccer.

Yeah I know my last post was about politics and this post is about sports. And this is supposed to be a geek blog now. The sports thing will eventually make sense, and as far as politics go...somebody has to keep an eye on that stuff, it may not be fun but it's important (if only so you know who to vote out when the time comes.) Also we're in a transitional phase here, so bear with me. Thanks for your patience.

From Germany: Stuttgart wins the 1st German National Roller Derby Championship. They've only been playing this sport for 4 years and there's already a national champion? Hey America time to get on the ball.

From Qatar: World Cup maybe moved to Winter in 2022. From the World Cup that is being dubbed "The FAIL that keeps on giving". So when in Qatar Don't be gay, don't be drunk (outside the stadium), don't be improperly dressed (if your female), we may need our neighbors to help us pull this off, and now they might not be able to get the climate controlled stadiums they promised? Might I suggest that if they can't get it together we just move the event to America.

UPDATE: I realized after I wrote this I should specify why a winter world cup is a problem. The problem is that a winter world cup will disrupt Europe's leagues (I'm not sure about other continents.) Granted they do have 12 years to deal with this problem and the others I mentioned above, but it seems like this wasn't thought all the way through when FIFA voted on who would host the World Cup.

From Canada: In 1995 Quebec lost a hockey team, 1100 fans of this team invaded New York last week in order to send a message that they would like a team again. You can read the aftermath here.

Not bad though a team that hasn't existed in 15 year getting 1100 people to go to another country for a single game. Especially when the game is being played by two teams who can't seem to draw a crowd to save their teams. (This statement maybe literal quite soon.)

Oh yeah tommorow is the last batch of games in European soccer until the new year so if you want to see some games go to ESPN3 (even if the games are too early for you, you can watch them on replay all weekend.) See you tomorrow.
